08:10:04 From Sherry Jennings : Good morning!
08:10:14 From Robert J Ballantyne : Here I am in Chat
08:11:58 From Robert J Ballantyne : There are no evil boards, just evil people
08:14:23 From Robert J Ballantyne : I’ll edit that out
08:16:15 From Robert J Ballantyne : I’ve seen organizations that are well managed, but those poor people have a board that is dysfunctional and becomes a disruption to the organization.
08:16:40 From Robert J Ballantyne : You don’t have to pay attention to every chat comment.
08:20:38 From Robert J Ballantyne : Maybe you were in the right room, and they were not
08:22:03 From Sherry Jennings : or if you were even offering what the community needed people to learn
08:23:43 From Robert J Ballantyne : So, do board members try to fit in with the culture of the board, or should each behave the way each thinks is right?
08:26:42 From Sherry Jennings : what’s wrong with advising/helping management?
08:29:51 From Sherry Jennings : what about management (CEO) that constantly draws the board into management issues?
08:29:58 From Robert J Ballantyne : It seems to me that when the board has truly learned how to govern effectively, then the new member has to learn that culture. So there are boards made up of people who govern intuitively. But there are also boards that have studied governance and behave in a thoughtful and constructive manner.
08:31:05 From Robert J Ballantyne : I like John’s comment about ‘Role Clarity.’
08:32:59 From Robert J Ballantyne : And the chair let the plumbing conversation continue!
08:35:01 From Robert J Ballantyne : That ONE VOICE depends on who is in the room at the time of a resolution/motion. And that can change from meeting to meeting.
08:36:20 From Robert J Ballantyne : 🙂 “Grumpy John”
08:37:22 From Robert J Ballantyne : We may be out of time, I’m getting a dialog box
08:38:11 From Sherry Jennings : so we acknowledge there is wisdom on the board…how to best tap into it?
08:38:23 From Robert J Ballantyne : Suddenly unlimited time…please use it.
08:39:04 From Robert J Ballantyne : Nope, carry on.
08:39:16 From Robert J Ballantyne : But invite Sherry in.
08:39:41 From Robert J Ballantyne : We can do a post mortem, and I’ll show up for that
08:42:56 From Robert J Ballantyne : I agree, stick to the agenda. I like having the board approve the agenda at the beginning of the meeting.
08:47:04 From Robert J Ballantyne : I’ve run into board members whose ONLY contribution is to find fault, play devil’s advocate, find out what is wrong, or why something (almost everything) will not work. Sometimes it is helpful, but it is usually just negative.
08:47:33 From Robert J Ballantyne : Hey, it is lonely being a chatroom-of-one.
08:47:46 From Sherry Jennings : jump online then
08:48:00 From Robert J Ballantyne : 🙂
